Steve Woods Wins the Dennis Smitham Memorial Main Event

Racing at South Sound Speedway on Saturday & Sunday September 1st & 2nd, 2012, was full of excitement with five classes on Saturday and 4 classes on Sunday; Dennis Smitham Street Stocks, D&S Light Truck & Auto Mini Stocks, Hi-Line Homes Legends, Olympic Trailer and Truck Accessories Bumblebees, and NW Baby Grands.

 

Dennis Smitham Street Stocks started on Saturday with qualifying for position in the two 25 lap heat races with the top eight from each heat race locked into the A main on Sunday.  First heat race started with Bryan Bykerk on the pole and Mike Kanavan on the outside. Bykerk takes the lead on lap 1. Zack Beaman exits the track on lap 11. Steve Prissel exits the track on lap 13. Bykerk goes on to win the first 25 lap heat race, followed by Richard Kerr, Kevin Carver, Dan Walker, Ron Stewart, Mike Carlson, Josh Childress, and Steve Woods to round out the top 8.  The Second heat race started with Todd Connell on the pole and Ryan Kerr on the outside. Connell takes the lead on lap 1. Kerr takes the lead on lap 2. Arnold Norton and Connell exit the track on lap 18. Andy Stibal takes the lead on lap 23 and goes on to win the second 25 lap heat race, followed by Kerr, Kim Wennerberg, Shawn Jones, Josh Pinkowsky, Kelly Hellewell, Gary Perry, and Mel Patrode to round out the top 8. All remaining drivers will be in the B Main on Sunday, with the top 4 moving up to the A main.

 

Sunday the B main started with Greg Davidson on the pole and Randy Pugh on the outside. Eric Lee has mechanical issues on the green flag and backs up the pack.  Zack Beaman, Bill Rutherford, and Morgan Burks get together in turn 1 and go into the wall. Davidson takes the lead on lap 1. Shannon Hensley gets a mechanical on lap 11. Jimmy Allen and Prissel get together on lap 17.  On lap 20, caution comes out for debris on the track.  On the restart, Davidson blows up and exits the track. Pugh takes over the lead. Doug Poirier blows up on lap 25 and exits the track. On lap 36, Daniel Jobe and Dale Yarbrough spin. Jobe and Monte Cox Jr. get together on lap 37, both drivers sent to the back of the pack. Kanavan exits the track on lap 37. Pugh goes on to win the 40 lap B main, followed by Dave Knittle, Andy Beaman, and Prissel to round out the top 4. The A main started with Bykerk on the pole and Stibal on the outside. Stibal takes the lead on lap 1. Jones blows up on lap 2 and exits the track. On lap 6, turn 1, Connell spins. On lap 34, Connell spins again, collecting Pinkowsky, Hellewell, Allen, and Childress. On lap 55, turn 1, Prissel spins and Perry is stopped on the line, on the back stretch, which brings out a caution.  On lap 65, turn 4, Walker spins. On the restart,  Zach Beaman spins. On lap 74, turn 4 Mike Carlson spins. Woods takes the lead on lap 37 and goes on to win the 100 lap Dennis Smitham Memorial Street Stock Main Event, followed by Stabil, Carver, Bykerk, and Richard Kerr to round out the top 5.       

 

Mini Stock Main event on Saturday started with Bill Hayes on the pole and Freeman Pruitt on the outside. Hayes takes the lead on lap 1. Pruitt takes the lead on lap 2. On lap 3, Dwayne DeYoung gets loose. DeYoung and Kevin Pegg exits the track. On lap 5, turn 3, John Morse pushes Tina McMillan into the wall. Morse gets sent to the back of the pack. On lap 9, turn 1, Morse hits Shayne Huson and Morse goes into the wall. On lap 18, turn 2, Mark Johnson hits the wall. On lap 24, turn 4, Grant Charneski and Hayes spin.  Dennis Shaffer takes the lead on lap 30 and goes on to win the 35 lap Mini Stock Main event, followed by Pruitt, Scott Maynard, Kyle Matthews, and Kevin Conway to round out the top 5.

On Sunday, the Mini Stock Main Event started with Bill Hayes on the pole and Shayne Huson on the outside. Hayes takes the lead on lap 1. Huson takes the lead on lap 5. On lap 8, turn 2, Craig Pfander spins Morse. On lap 11, Johnson bumps Kyle Matthews into Hayes. Huson goes on to win the 25 lap Mini Stock Main event, followed by Johnson, Devin Matthews, Pegg, and Jon Baglien to round out the top 5.

 

Legends Main event on Saturday started with Brian Boyd on the pole and Brent Mack on the outside. Boyd takes the lead on lap 1. Jeremy Sabin takes the lead on lap 2. Parker Stephens spins on lap 2. Jesse Branham takes the lead on lap 5. Duane Swanson takes the lead on lap 6. Randy Schaaf takes the lead on lap 11 and goes on to win the 25 lap Legend Main Event, followed by Swanson, Branham, Stephens, and Randy Beddow to round out the top 5. On Sunday, the Legend Main Event started with Jesse Branham on the pole and Brian Boyd on the outside. Branham takes the lead on lap 1. Jeff Sisk takes the lead on lap 3. Randy Schaaf takes the lead on lap 6. On lap 9, Sisk gets black flagged for spinning Swanson. On lap 12, Swanson spins.  On the final lap of the race, turn 4, Schaaf and Stephens racing for the lead. Schaaf gets into Stephens and they both spin, Swanson takes over the lead and wins the 30 lap Legend Main Event, followed by Randy Beddow, Eric Shover, Brent Mack, and Sisk to round out the top 5.

 

Bumblebee Main event on Saturday started with Bryce Randall on the pole and Dennis Lalander on the outside. Shawn Breitzman takes the lead on lap 1. On lap 1, turn 2, Randall spins. Curtiss Buchanan exits the track on lap1. Ron Schlund Sr. exits the track on lap 1. On lap 4, Chris Branon gets a black flag for dumping Greg Schlund.  On lap 13, Richard Woolverton gets into Steve Pierson. Breitzman goes on to win the 20 lap Bumblebee Main Event, followed by Charles LaMere, Pierson, Woolverton, and Jonathan Curfman to round out the top 5. On Sunday, the Bumblebee Main event started with Bryce Randall on the pole and Ryan Snow on the outside. Snow takes the lead on lap 1.  On lap 3, Ron Schlund Sr. takes the lead. Pierson goes to the middle on lap 13. Greg Schlund gets black flagged on lap 13 and Charles LaMere takes over the lead. John Fortenberry exits the track on lap 18. LaMere goes on to win the 20 lap Bumblebee Main Event, followed by Snow, Breitzman, Branon, and Devin Rothmeyer to round out the top 5.

 

Baby Grand Main event on Saturday started with Brad McCutcheon on the pole and Mike Crawford on the outside. Jim Guinn takes the lead on lap 1. On lap 12, turn 1, Brad Crawford spins Bryan Crawford, both drivers sent to the back of the pack. Guinn goes on to win the 20 lap Baby Grand Main Event, followed by McCutcheon, Mark Maynard Jr., Brad Crawford, and Bryan Crawford to round out the top 5.
